Whipple Observatory is atop Mount Hopkins in the Santa Rita Mountains. The Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory Visitors Center is accessible from I-19 exit 56 (Canoa Rd.); from Canoa Rd. turn e. to Frontage Rd., 3 mi. s. to Elephant Head Rd., 1 mi. e. to Mount Hopkins Rd., then 7 mi. s.e. The MMT Observatory houses one of the world's largest mirrored telescopes for conducting interstellar investigations. A visitor center has exhibits about astronomy, astrophysics and natural science as well as scenic views. A 6-hour guided tour of the observatory is available by appointment; phone for more information.</br>Guided tours are available.</br>
Visitor center free. Observatory tour $10; $5 (ages 6-12). Children ages 0-5 are not permitted. Reservations are required.
Hours: Visitor center open Mon.-Fri. 8:30-4:30. Tours depart Mon., Wed. and Fri. at 9, Mar.-Nov. Closed major holidays.
