University of Arizona-Biosphere 2, 5 mi. n.e. of jct. SRs 79 and 77 to 32540 S. Biosphere Rd., is a glass and steel structure that encompasses some 3 acres and five biomes: rain forest, ocean, savanna, desert and marsh. The biosphere is a learning, teaching and research center for determining an ecosystem's ability to recycle air, water and nutrients in order to sustain human, plant and animal life.
The guided Under the Glass tour provides visitors a closer look at the interior of the facility, including its rainforest, savanna, ocean, lung and technological systems. The tour begins with a film presentation and includes a walking tour inside the Biosphere 2.
Note: The interior portion of the tour involves ascending and descending 150 steps and is not accessible by wheelchair or baby stroller. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
