Challenger Space Center is 3.2 mi. n. on 91st Ave., 1 mi. e. on Lake Pleasant Blvd., then .3 mi. n. to 21170 N. 83rd Ave. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the center features permanent and temporary space exhibits as well as stargazing events, Lego building workshops, rocket-launching events and classes and camps. A highlight is the 2-hour simulated space mission, including launching and docking. The mission control room is based on the design of the Johnson Space Center; the spacecraft simulates a room on the International Space Station.
