Challenger Space Center is 3.2 mi. n. on 91st Ave., 1 mi. e. on Lake Pleasant Blvd., then .3 mi. n. to 21170 N. 83rd Ave. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the center features permanent and temporary space exhibits as well as stargazing events, Lego building workshops, rocket-launching events and classes and camps. A highlight is the 2-hour simulated space mission, including launching and docking. The mission control room is based on the design of the Johnson Space Center; the spacecraft simulates a room on the International Space Station. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$8; $7 (ages 55+ and military with ID); $6 (ages 3-12). Space mission $22.50; $19.50 (ages 55+ and seventh grade-age 14 for Voyage to Mars mission and fifth grade-age 14 for Rendezvous with a Comet mission). Students below sixth grade must be with a ticketed adult on space mission. The space mission Rendezvous with a Comet is not recommended for students below fifth grade. The space mission Voyage to Mars is not recommended for students below seventh grade. Reservations are required for space mission.
