Catalina State Park, 9 mi. n. off SR 77 Milepost 81 to 11570 N. Oracle Rd., is home to 5,500 acres of desert plants. At the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains, the park's activities include bird-watching, hiking, camping and horseback riding. A .75-mile interpretive trail winds around the Romero Ruins, the site of a Hohokam village occupied 500-1450. Pets on leash are allowed. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
$7 (per private vehicle, up to four passengers); $3 (per additional adult passenger in vehicle or individual arriving on foot or bicycle). Camping $15-$30 (per private vehicle).
Hours: Park open daily 5 a.m.-10 p.m. Ranger station daily 8-5.
