Balashi Gold Mill Ruins is 3 mi. (5 km) s.e. of the airport. Balashi was the site of Aruba's early gold mining industry. Ruins of gold smelters are visible at Frenchman's Pass. Aruba's drinking water is produced at the nearby desalination plant, one of the largest in the world. The water's purity gives it the nickname “Balashi cocktail,” and the island brewery uses the same source.
