Chinatown centers on E. Pender St. between Carrall and Gore sts. The second largest area of its kind in North America, Chinatown is lined with elaborately carved and gilded shops displaying jade, bamboo, rattan, brassware, silk and brocade. Sidewalk markets feature Oriental produce. Even the phone booths are topped with pagoda roofs. During Chinese New Year the streets resound with the din of drums and fireworks.
The Chinese Cultural Centre Museum & Archives, 555 Columbia St., has displays and photographs about the life of Chinese immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries. The second floor exhibition relates the history of Chinese-Canadians in the military.
