Government House and Gardens is at 1401 Rockland Ave. The grounds in front of the lieutenant governor's residence consist of 5.7 hectares (14 acres) of formal gardens, featuring perennials, herbs, roses, irises, azaleas, rhododendrons and other floral varieties. The property behind the house, a terraced rock garden, covers a 9-hectare (22-acre) rare Garry oak woodland that is native to southeast Vancouver Island. Picnicking is permitted.

Hours: Formal gardens daily dawn-dusk. House tours are scheduled for one Sat. each month at 10 and 11, May-Oct.; phone ahead to confirm schedule.
