Central Coast Sailing Charters and Avila Beach Whale Watching

Central Coast Sailing Charters and Avila Beach Whale Watching tours meet about 100 yards out on the Harford Pier, which is at the end of Avila Beach Dr. The 44-foot sailboat SPIRIT takes up to six passengers on 2.5-hour morning, afternoon and evening sails through San Luis Bay. The captain shares local history on each trip, and while wildlife sightings vary, they may include birds, dolphins, harbor seals, sea lions and sea otters. Whales can often be spotted January through April and June through September; during these times, the route may change slightly in order to focus on whale-watching.

Snacks, water and soft drinks are complimentary as are two samples of local beer and wine for guests ages 21 and older on afternoon and evening cruises. Private charters also are offered.

Note: You first board a Zodiac-type boat from a floating dock; this inflatable vessel takes you out to the sailboat, where there are two steps to climb to get aboard. Morning and evening sails usually offer the calmest waters. A restroom is available on the sailboat.
