Campanile, at the center of the University of California Berkeley campus, is 307 feet tall and contains a 61-bell carillon that chimes on the hour and plays music. Also known as Sather Tower, this campus landmark was built in 1914. An elevator and staircase take visitors to the observation deck, which offers expansive views (on clear days) of nearby Oakland and more distant San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Elevator fee $3; $2 (ages 3-17, senior citizens and Cal Alumni Association members with ID); free (ages 0-2 and UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff).
Hours: Music is played daily at 7:50 a.m., noon and 6 p.m., during the school year; schedule varies rest of year. Recitals lasting 45 minutes are performed Sun. at 2. Elevator operates Mon.-Fri. 10-3:45, Sat. 10-4:45, Sun. 10-1:30 and 3-4:45. Closed university holidays.
