Pros: staff friendly, loffered me loaner umbrella, advice . i enjoyed fireplace in lobby, decor, hospitable dining area, easy to sit anywhere at anytime. tables need refinishing in dining.

Pros: The staff were kind and friendly. Very helpful.

Cons: I did not like the smell of the entire hotel: lobby, bedroom, and restroom. It smelled like a combination of generic cleaning products and stale air. It made me question the cleanliness of the hotel.

Pros: We arrived early and the staff was very helpful and accommodating. They helped us by holding our luggage until we were able to check in later.

Cons: There was no shuttle. We had to get on the bus with our luggage to get from the train which was about 1 1/2 miles away. The window in the room did not have any curtain to close for privacy and light blockage.

Pros: The breakfast! Good coffee, crisp bacon, and a good selection of yogurt, pastries, fruit, etc. Also, free parking!

Cons: My room was a bit loud, but that's to be expected, since it was adjacent to the elevator.

Holiday Inn Express may not...

Pros: The location was convenient for our purpose of visiting Cal Berkeley on a campus tour. The room was clean and it had a fridge and microwave. Parking was included.

Cons: The check in staff tried to give us a room configuration that we did not book. He gave us a room with a king bed and pull out sofa. When I showed him my booking.com confirmation with picture showing that I booked 2 queen beds, he said that the hotel could not always guarantee third party online sites the room that was booked. I told him that that would be a problem for the hotel if he did not give me the room I booked. He said that the hotel was full that day which was not really my problem. I informed him that I was there at 3PM and if a 2 queen bed room was available, that he was obligated to give it to us, which he eventually did, although he balked and said he could only give us a room next to the gym and by the elevator. Me thinks there is a problem with the management at Holiday Inn Express and perhaps should not be afforded the opportunity to sell their rooms on booking.com if they are going to treat their customers as less than. Further, it unfortunately will make me think twice about using booking.com in the future, as well as Holiday Inn Express.

Expensive and disappointing

Pros: Breakfast was good.

Cons: Toilet did not flush. After phoning for a repair, housekeeping showed up with a plunger and left it to us to fix. Bathtub didn't drain, and we were ankle deep in soapy water in 2 minutes. Bathroom mirror was chipped. There was no makeup/shaving mirror.

Pleasant, no-frills hotel with great...

Pros: Staff service was responsive and friendly. Wifi worked great. Heating was great.

Pros: Location was great, breakfast good, rooms comfortable and clean.

Cons: Slipped and fell out of the bathtub/shower in the morning. The bottom of the tub was very slick when wet - there was no traction. The hotel needs to provide bath mats for the bottom of the tub. Thankfully I didn't hit my head - just my back, shoulder and arm against the toilet.
