Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, reached from Big Pine by the Westgard Pass Rd. and White Mountain Rd. to Schulman Grove (elev. 10,000 ft.), is 28,000 acres in Inyo National Forest. This forest preserves these gnarled trees, some more than 4,000 years old—a millennium older than the oldest redwoods. Three self-guiding trails are available. During the summer, naturalist services are provided daily at Schulman Grove Visitor Center, 798 N. Main St. in Bishop. Note: Dress warmly, bring adequate water and have a full tank of gas; there are no telephones, gas stations or water in the area. Picnicking is permitted.
$3 per person ($6 maximum per private vehicle); free (ages 0-16).
Hours: Forest daily mid-May to late Oct. (weather permitting). Visitor center Fri.-Mon. 10-4, mid-June through Oct. 31 (weather permitting).
