AAA Editor Notes

Romano Gabriel's Wooden Sculpture Garden is at 315 2nd St. Gabriel, who died in 1977, came to the U.S. from Italy in 1913 and eventually settled in Eureka, where he worked as a gardener. His “garden” was a meticulously constructed Italian-American neighborhood village created entirely from scrap wood, primarily salvaged produce crates, right down to a row of salamis hanging up to dry. Gabriel spent nearly 3 decades fashioning his whimsical art, which was originally displayed in his front yard and later reassembled as a permanent, public exhibition.
