Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park, on the American River at 9980 Greenback Ln., performed the first long-distance transmission of hydroelectric power to Sacramento in 1895. Now a national landmark as well as a state historic park, it is part of Folsom Lake State Recreation Area and includes an interpretive center. Guided tours of the dam are available.
Tours free. Parking: $10.
Hours: Grounds daily 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Interpretive center open and tours given Wed.-Sun. noon-4. Closed major holidays.
