Shinzen Friendship Garden is in Woodward Park, which is bordered by SR 41 (Yosemite Frwy.), N. Friant Rd. and E. Audubon Dr. The park entrance is on Audubon Dr., just w. of Friant Rd. This serene 5-acre garden was established to honor Fresno's sister city of Kochi, Japan. Divided into sectors according to the four seasons, the garden has plantings representative of each time of year. The garden features a lake, koi pond, stream beds and waterfalls, traditional Japanese bridges, a grove of ume (Japanese apricot) trees and a teahouse. Paved pathways wind among pines, evergreens and seasonally blooming azaleas, camellias and flowering crab apple, cherry and tulip trees. Guided tours are available; advance reservations are required. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Park admission $5 per private vehicle; $3 (ages 65+ per private vehicle); $7 (holidays). Garden $5; $1 (ages 4-14 and 65+ with ID); $7 (family, up to five people).
Hours: Mon.-Fri. 4-7:30, Sat.-Sun. and holidays 10-7:30, Apr.-Sept.; Sat.-Sun. and holidays 10-5, rest of year.
