Empire Mine State Historic Park, 1 mi. e. of SR 49 at 10791 E. Empire St., produced nearly 6 million ounces of gold during its operation. Within the park are 10 miles of hiking trails and a mine with 367 miles of passageways. Restored buildings include the owner's cottage, clubhouse, a smithy, hoist and compression houses and a machine shop. Living-history tours, with guides in period garb; a scale model of the underground workings of the mine; and guided tours of the cottage and the mine yard are offered. Picnic facilities are in the parking area; food is not permitted inside the park. Pets on leash are allowed. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
$7; $3 (ages 6-16). Most tours free; living-history cottage tours cost $2. Cash only.
Hours: Park open daily 10-5. Trails open daily dawn-dusk. Cottage and mine yard tours are given daily Mar.-Dec.; Sat.-Sun., rest of year (weather permitting). Living-history tours are given Sat.-Sun. in summer. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
