Railtown 1897 State Historic Park is at 11855 5th Ave. Within the park are an interpretive center, a roundhouse, station, trains and yard facilities. Sierra Railway Co. began operating from Jamestown in 1897, carrying passengers and freight throughout the region's gold-mining area. Visitors can observe the maintenance and restoration of railroad equipment.

A video presentation and seasonal train excursions are available. Self-guiding and guided tours (when a guide is available) are offered. Steam train excursions on the historic Sierra #3 also are offered; phone ahead for information.

Picnicking is permitted.

$5; $3 (ages 6-17). Train (includes park admission) $15; $10 (ages 6-17).
Park open daily 9:30-4:30, Apr.-Oct.; 10-3, rest of year. Phone ahead for roundhouse and shop tour hours. Train rides are given Sat.-Sun. and holidays at 10:30, noon, 1:30 and 3, Apr.-Oct., and on select weekends the rest of the year. Diesel train rides are offered Wed. at 11 and 1, mid-July to late Aug. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
