AAA Editor Notes
Donner Memorial State Park, 2 mi. w. on Donner Pass Rd., is near the site where the ill-fated Donner party was stranded trying to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains during the severe winter of 1846-47. As members of the 89-person party died, some of those remaining resorted to cannibalism; only 47 were rescued.

The park visitor center has exhibits about the Chinese emigrant experience, construction of the railroad and early motoring adventures over Donner Pass. The Pioneer Monument is near the museum. One- to 2-hour guided hikes are offered in summer; phone ahead to confirm availability.

Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
