Mammoth Lakes Area, 12 mi. n. of Crowley Lake off US 395, encompasses several thousand acres in east central California, and contains portions of the Pacific Crest Trail, Ansel Adams Wilderness Area, John Muir Wilderness Area, Devils Postpile National Monument, Rainbow Falls, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Mammoth City Historical Site, Mammoth Lakes Basin and the Hot Creek Geologic Site. The area has facilities for hiking, fishing, mountain biking, golfing, boating, rock climbing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, snowboarding and cross-country and downhill skiing.

The California Welcome Center Mammoth Lakes, 2510 Main St. (SR 203) at the entrance to town, offers wilderness permits, interagency passes, exhibits and a picnic area.

Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
