It traces the history of this site from its habitation by Native Americans through a rich military past that began with the mission and presidio that founded Monterey in 1770. Exhibits depict such events as a revolutionary attack on Monterey in 1818, as well as the presidio's development from the first military fort in California to a U.S. Army training base. Several monuments are within walking distance, including the Sloat Monument, honoring the commander of the American forces that captured Monterey in 1846. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
