James V. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, w. off SR 1 via California Ave., preserves marine life in one of the state's most diverse intertidal regions. The reserve is within the Montara State Marine Reserve, a state marine protected area. Marine life typically visible includes crabs, snails, mussels, sea stars, sea slugs and harbor seals. Low tide is the best time to explore; consult a local tide chart or phone the reserve for information.
Note: No buckets or containers, balls or kites are allowed on the beach. Collecting animals, shells, rocks and plants is strictly prohibited. Dogs and other pets are not permitted. Fishing and picnicking are prohibited.
Picnicking is permitted.
