AAA Editor Notes
California Cavern is e. on Mountain Ranch Rd., then about 2.8 mi. s.e. on Michel and Cave City rds., following signs. Chambers and passageways contain glittering formations ranging from fragile soda straws on the ceiling to colossal stalagmites rising from the floor. Discovered in 1850, the cavern offers gemstone mining and a nature trail in addition to a variety of cave trips.
A 60- to 80-minute guided walking tour provides information about area history as well as the history and geology of the cave. Depending on water levels in the cave, the trip includes a visit to the Jungle Room, named for the crystalline vines that cover its ceiling. For the more adventurous, two more physically demanding spelunking trips are available by reservation.
Picnicking is permitted.
