New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum is 2.5 mi. w. off Almaden Expwy. (CR G8) at 21350 Almaden Rd., in New Almaden Quicksilver County Park. The museum is housed in La Casa Grande, an 1854 brick residence that was home to the New Almaden Quicksilver Mine manager and his family.
Exhibits depict the mercury mining operations that began in New Almaden in 1845 and explain the process of extracting mercury from the cinnabar ore found in the area. Mining family artifacts are displayed, and a diorama replicates the interior of a mine shaft. One room is restored to resemble the mine manager's office.
