California State Railroad Museum is at 2nd and I sts. The three-level building houses 21 restored locomotives and train cars. More than 40 interpretive exhibits, dioramas, pictures, murals and a 20-minute film presentation document the history of American railroading 1860-1960. The building's striking thematic design and gleaming exhibits are impressive. Sacramento Southern Railroad trains transport visitors on a 6-mile sightseeing journey weekends from April through September. Trains depart from the Central Pacific Freight Depot in Old Sacramento, on Front street between J and K streets. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
Museum $10; $5 (ages 6-17). Train fare $12; $6 (ages 6-17). First-class El Dorado car $20; $15 (ages 6-17).
Hours: Museum open daily 10-5. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Trains operate Sat.-Sun. on the hour 11-4, Apr.-Sept. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
