Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is at 1700 Cabrillo Memorial Dr., just s. of jct. Woodward Rd. Named after a Civil War general, the federal military cemetery is the final resting place of more than 100,000 people, including Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton, decorated U.S. Marine Corps officer Victor H. Krulak and screenwriter Laurence Stallings. Dedicated to the victims of the 1905 USS Bennington disaster, a 60-foot granite obelisk is on the grounds, as are several other notable monuments.

Bisected by Cabrillo Memorial Drive, the site is situated on the hilly Point Loma peninsula. The eastern side of the cemetery overlooks San Diego Bay and the city, while the western half offers views of the Pacific Ocean.
