Civic Center is bordered n. and s. by Golden Gate Ave. and Market St. and e. and w. by Hyde and Franklin sts. Federal, state and city governmental buildings and cultural institutions are grouped around two expansive, open plazas, Civic Center Plaza and United Nations Plaza. Foremost among these architecturally impressive structures is the Beaux Arts-style San Francisco City Hall, capped by a striking dome. Also flanking Civic Center Plaza are the Supreme Court of California, the San Francisco Public Library and Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.
The United Nations Conference on International Organization, culminating in the signing of the Charter of the United Nations, was held at the Civic Center in 1945.
