AAA Editor Notes
Presidio of San Francisco, in the n.w. part of the city, was an active military garrison almost continuously for 218 years; it closed as an Army post in 1994. Within the 1,480-acre site are historic military barracks as well as wooded areas, beaches, and expansive bay and ocean vistas.
The Presidio's boundaries encompass Fort Point, San Francisco National Cemetery, Fort Winfield Scott, Crissy Field, The Walt Disney Family Museum and film and animation giant Lucasfilm Ltd. Maps outlining 11 miles of hiking and bicycling trails are available at the visitor center in Building 150 on Montgomery Street, near the corner of Lincoln Boulevard.
Note: A new, permanent visitor center is being built but the opening date has not yet been determined; phone for updated information.
Guided tours are available.
