AAA Editor Notes
USS Iowa is at Port of Los Angeles, Berth 87, just e. of the intersection of S. Harbor Blvd. and W. 1st St. The ship—launched in 1942—served during the height of U.S. Navy operations in the Pacific Theater during World War II. It led a new class of quick, extremely powerful battleships and undertook efforts in Korea and the Cold War until 1990 when, decommissioned, it became part of the Navy's reserve fleet.

You'll see the bridge, mess areas, missile decks and 5- and 16-inch guns as well as the Captain's Cabin, which has President Franklin D. Roosevelt's bathtub—a necessity due to the 32nd president's inability to stand for long periods of time. In addition to President Roosevelt, the USS Iowa has also hosted Presidents Ronald Regan and George H.W. Bush and dignitaries.

Note: The self-guiding tour requires climbing steep ladders; wheelchairs, walkers and strollers are not permitted on the ship.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
