Montalvo Arts Center and Arboretum is .5 mi. s.e. on SR 9, then 1 mi. s.w. on Montalvo Rd. Formerly the summer home of U.S. senator and San Francisco mayor James D. Phelan, the estate now serves as a center for fine arts. The 1912 Mediterranean-style villa has a formal garden and trails to lookout points on the surrounding hills. A 10-studio artist residency complex, two performing arts venues and the Project Space Gallery are on the grounds. Two-hour walking tours are offered. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Free. Walking tour fee $10.
Hours: Mon.-Thurs. 8-7, Fri.-Sun. and holidays 9-5, Apr.-Sept.; Mon.-Thurs. 8-5, Fri.-Sun. and holidays 9-5, rest of year. Project Space Gallery open Thurs.-Sun. 11-3. The garden is occasionally closed for private events. Closed Jan. 1 and Christmas. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
