AAA Editor Notes

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, 40 Presidential Dr., is a Spanish Mission-style structure built on a hilltop overlooking Simi Valley and the Pacific Ocean. The museum houses 18 exhibit galleries and includes President Reagan and his wife's burial sites. Within the library's museum are photographs and memorabilia of Reagan's life, including his youth, Hollywood years, time as California's governor, and two terms as president. Recent exhibits allow visitors to stand behind an exact replica of the podium from Reagan's inauguration as well as star in a movie with Reagan in an interactive film booth. Exhibits of note include a full-scale replica of the Oval Office, a section of the Berlin Wall, and the actual suit Reagan wore on March 30, 1981, when he was shot by John Hinckley Jr. A 14-foot-long steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center is on display in one gallery. In the three-level Air Force One Pavilion, visitors may walk through the cockpit, presidential quarters and high-security areas of a retired Air Force One, a Boeing 707 which flew seven presidents while in service. Another exhibit is dedicated to the history and responsibilities of the United States Secret Service. Also featured in the pavilion are Reagan's presidential limousines, a Secret Service vehicle and a Marine One helicopter. Note: On busy days (mainly weekends and holidays), the parking lot at the library fills early. Parking is permitted along Presidential Drive between Madera Road and the library. An auxiliary lot off Madera Road is used during times of extremely high numbers of visitors. A complimentary shuttle van runs continuously between the library and wherever the far end of parked cars is, be it along Presidential Drive or the Madera lot. Food is available. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
