Moaning Cavern is at 5350 Moaning Cave Rd. Although it was explored in 1851 by gold miners, Native American legends revolving around haunting, moaning sounds allegedly emanating from the cavern's entrance date back centuries earlier. Guided 45-minute walking tours descend 165 feet, 100 feet of which are via a steel spiral staircase that leads into a space tall enough to hold the Statue of Liberty.
Visitors also can descend into the cavern on a 165-foot rappel (no experience necessary) or take a 3-hour Adventure Trip into its farthest depths. Gemstone mining, zip lines and a climbing tower also are on site.
