Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve is 3.5 mi. e. of SR 1 on Dolan Rd., then 1.9 mi. n. to 1700 Elkhorn Rd. This 1,700-acre coastal area protects the habitat of hundreds of species of birds, fish and invertebrates. It is an important feeding and nesting ground for many waterfowl and migratory shorebirds. Walking trails wind beneath a canopy of coastal live oak trees and along fingers of salt marsh. The reserve's visitor center has educational displays. Picnicking is permitted near the visitor center; smoking is prohibited. Dogs and bicycles are not permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
Visitor center free. Fee to walk trails $4 (payable by credit card only); free (ages 0-15).
Hours: Reserve and visitor center open Wed.-Sun. 9-5. Guided nature walks departing from the visitor center are given Sat.-Sun. at 10 and 1. A birding tour is offered on the first Sat. of the month at 8:30 a.m.
