Calico Mountains Archaeological Site, just n. of I-15 via Minneola Rd., following signs, is an excavation begun by Dr. Louis Leakey in 1964. To date, more than 12,000 artifacts have been excavated. The site has active digs the first full weekend of the month October through May. Examples of early prehistoric tools are displayed at the visitor’s center and in place at the dig sites. Items found from this site are displayed at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands.
Note: Unescorted visitors must stay on designated trails. Comfortable hiking shoes and layered clothing is recommended.
Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
