Wawona is about 27 mi. s. of Yosemite Valley off Wawona Rd. (SR 41). Native Americans originally dubbed the area Pallahchun, meaning “a good place to stop.” In the 1800s Wawona became an important pioneer stage stop and later evolved into a popular mountain resort. Its meadows, nearby river, and surrounding pine and oak trees create an idyllic recreation area that offers camping, riding, golf, swimming and tennis facilities.
