Fort San Miguel

Fort San Miguel (El Fuerte de San Miguel) is off Av. Escénica, about 5 km (3 mi.) s. of downtown on the way to Lerma. This is one of the most impressive of the former Spanish fortifications that once guarded the city. Two ramps with steps lead up to the roof and a panoramic view of the city and the Bay of Campeche. Inside the fort is the Museum of Mayan Art, which displays priceless artifacts, including jade burial masks excavated from the Calakmul archeological site.
