Church of San Cristóbal

Church of San Cristóbal (Templo de San Cristóbal) is perched atop a steep hill where Calle Hermanos Domínguez dead-ends at Calle Ignacio Allende, 4 blks. s. of Plaza 31 de Marzo via Av. Insurgentes. Although you'll have to climb approximately 240 steps to reach it, the view of the city from the lookout point (mirador) at the top is well worth the effort. Taxis also drive up the back side of the hill.

The exterior features stone carvings of saints and biblical figures. The interior is no less ornate, although centuries of soot and smoke from burning incense and candles have left a patina of grime on the many beautiful oil paintings. Vendors congregate outside the church, selling jewelry, crafts, amber, textiles and other items, and if you're practiced at haggling there are good deals to be had.

Note: This is an active parish church, and walk-in visitors should respect those who are there to worship.
