Rio Grande Scenic Railroad departs from the station at 601 State Ave. at jct. 6th St. The excursion train carries passengers through the Sangre de Cristo mountains, surrounded by dramatic 14,000-foot peaks along the edge of the San Isabel National Forest. Weekday excursions go past serene high mountain meadows and spectacular canyons to eventually arrive in the historic small town of La Veta for a 1-hour lunch and shopping stop.
Both one-way and round-trips are available. Weekend summer train trips to the summit (June through September) from Alamosa feature outdoor performances at a train and concert venue are offered.
