Pikes Peak Highway starts at Cascade, 10 mi. w. of Colorado Springs off US 24. This scenic 19-mile toll road leads to the 14,115-foot summit of one of the nation’s tallest mountains. From the gateway at an elevation of 7,400 feet, visitors travel above the timberline and encounter scenic vistas, alpine forests, mountain reservoirs and wildlife habitats. The historic Glen Cove Inn, the North Slope Recreation Area, the Crystal Reservoir Gift Shop and the Summit House offer visitor services. Caution: Excessive automotive braking is dangerous; use low gear for ascent and descent. An informational handout provides safe driving tips. High altitudes may be hazardous to infants or those with respiratory or other major health problems. Fishing and hiking are permitted; a state fishing permit is required. Allow 2 hours, 30 minutes for round-trip travel. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
May-Nov. $15; $5 (ages 6-15). Maximum charge per private vehicle $50 (up to five people). Dec.-Apr. $10; $5 (ages 6-15). Maximum charge for private vehicle $35 (up to 5 people). Fishing $5.
Hours: Uphill gate open daily 7:30-6, Memorial Day weekend-Labor Day; 7:30-5, day after Labor Day-Sept. 30; 9-3, rest of year (weather permitting). Fishing season lasts early May to mid-Oct.
