Anasazi Heritage Center, 3.5 mi. w. of Dolores on SR 184, interprets the history and native culture of the Four Corners region, including Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. Ancient pottery displays, interactive exhibits, two 12th-century village sites, changing special exhibits and events are presented. Visitors can try their hand at weaving on a Pueblo-style loom or grinding corn.
As the visitor center for Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, the museum offers maps, brochures and orientation, as well as two short video programs about the ancient culture: “Visit With Respect” is an appeal from Native Americans to protect their ancestral places; “The Cultural History of the Great Sage Plain” focuses on archaeologists’ discoveries during the 19th- and 20th centuries. A paved, half-mile nature trail leads to the hilltop Escalante Pueblo.
