This historic property was built by the famous Freelan Oscar Stanley, co-inventor of the Stanley Steamer car and manufacturer of violins. Stephen King stayed at the Stanley after a late season attempt to visit the Rocky Mountain National Park. The mostly empty hotel became the inspiration for King's famous novel 'The Shining.' Pros: Overall it was nice. Ghost tour was fun.
Cons: No continental breakfast. Cold coffee at breakfast. Disappointed in the service at breakfast. Waiter gave us cold coffee and then we had to ask another waiter to give us fresh hot coffee. Price way too high for the service.

Pros: A beautiful old hotel. Service was the best we have ever received at any hotel. Just a beautiful place with the mountains surrounding it. The landscaping was very nice. Many places to take photos. The little cafe had yummy breakfast rolls. The main restaurant was good.
Cons: Our first room was to small because we had to use a roll away bed and hardly had room to roll it out. But second night changed to a different room and it was larger. The roll away mattress was very bad--springs in your back all night.

Pros: We liked the historic look of the hotel.
Cons: Besides a historic tour, we found there was little to do at the hotel (no pool, etc). Also, there was no air conditioning in the room, our bed was a full or a small queen size (too small), and room service was backed up over an hour so we had to leave and find our own dinner after traveling quite a distance to get to the hotel. After checking out, I noticed my credit card was double billed and the difference not credited for 2-3 days.

Pros: Yes, the Stanley is obviously an historic and 'elegant' establishment. However the number of freeloading, careless tourists that flood the well maintained grounds and crowd the inside is very undesirable. If you want to stay in an antpile of pushy adults, screaming kids and generalized chaos, stay here during the summertime. If you want the extravagant atmosphere they advertise, go at another time. The elk will still be there.
Cons: Crowd control. Exhorbitant expense.
