AAA Editor Notes
Ute Indian Museum, 3 mi. s. on US 550 to 17253 Chipeta Rd., highlights the Ute Indians and early explorers, including the Franciscan missionaries who mapped and named many rivers, valleys and mountains in western Colorado. The museum displays historical dioramas and a gallery with changing exhibits, and medicinal plants are featured in a botanical garden. A monument honors Chief Ouray, peacemaker between the Utes and the settlers, upon whose traditional homeland the museum now stands. The grave of his wife, Chipeta, and her brother Chief John McCook, also are on the grounds.

Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 45 minutes minimum.
