Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House, 40 Palmer St., is a 16-room Victorian villa overlooking Stonington Harbor. The 1853 house, built for the Yankee mariner who discovered Antarctica in 1820, contains memorabilia from Palmer's discovery as well as period portraits, furnishings and artifacts. There are spectacular views of the harbor from the building's octagonal cupola.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
