African American Civil War Memorial

African American Civil War Memorial is at the corner of Vermont Ave., 10th St. and U St. N.W. It is a tribute to African Americans who served on the side of the Union during the Civil War. The 10-foot-tall bronze “Spirit of Freedom” sculpture depicts soldiers and a sailor ready to leave home for battle. Low semicircular walls bear the names of the 209,145 members of the United States Colored Troops (USCT), a separate bureau of the U.S. Army.
