Smithsonian Gardens are adjacent to the Smithsonian museums along the National Mall (bordered by Independence and Constitution avenues). Covering over 33 acres, these “outdoor museums” are a beautiful, enjoyable and educational way to appreciate nature.

Colorful and fragrant varieties of roses bloom at the Kathrine Dulin Folger Rose Garden, along Jefferson Drive next to the Smithsonian Castle, from mid-May into November. Between the Arts and Industries Building and the Hirshhorn Museum is the Mary Livingston Ripley Garden. Planted along a curving brick walkway is a variety of seasonal annuals in raised beds, augmented by shrubs and woody perennials.

Across the Mall, the Pollinator Garden and Urban Bird Habitat at the National Museum of Natural History provide sustenance and shelter for their respective inhabitants. The Heirloom Garden and Victory Garden at the National Museum of American History showcase plants and vegetables that have a special place in American gardens. The Freer Gallery Courtyard, the Hirshhorn Sculpture Garden and the landscapes surrounding the National Museum of African American History & Culture, the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of the American Indian all complement the museums they border.

Guided tours are available.
