AAA Editor Notes
The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church is at 1313 New York Ave. N.W. Organized in 1803, it was attended by John Quincy Adams and Abraham Lincoln. The church's distinguished roster of ministers include Dr. Phineas Gurley, who delivered Lincoln's funeral oration; Dr. Peter Marshall, whose life story is documented in the book and film “A Man Called Peter”; and Dr. George Docherty, whose 1954 Lincoln Day sermon, attended by President Dwight Eisenhower, prompted the addition of the words “one nation under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance.

The present Federal-style building features 19 contemporary stained-glass windows. Visitors can see Lincoln's pew, hitching post and the original manuscript of his proposal to abolish slavery.

Guided tours are available.
