AAA Editor Notes
Anacostia Community Museum is at 1901 Fort Pl. S.E. in Fort Stanton Park, approximately 5 mi. from the National Mall. Part of the Smithsonian, the museum was established in 1967 as the nation's first federally funded neighborhood museum. The initial focus was on African American themes, but in 2006 the museum's mission was expanded to embrace cultural and social issues affecting contemporary urban communities worldwide.

The collection of objects and archival materials dates from the early 1800s. Displays explore the District of Columbia, neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River, national and international community issues, and African American history and culture.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
