Leon Trotsky Museum (Museo Casa de Leon Trotsky) is about 8 blks. n. of Plaza Hidalgo at Av. Río Churubusco #410, between avs. Gómez Farías and Morelos (M: Coyoacán, line 3). The Russian revolutionary took up residence here after being exiled from the Soviet Union in 1929. He was murdered at home on Aug. 20, 1940. An ice pick-wielding assassin (a Spanish communist) accomplished the deed, which had been attempted months earlier when Stalinist sympathizers showered the house with a hail of bullets.
The fortresslike dwelling is capped with turrets once occupied by armed guards. Inside are Trotsky's kitchen, bedroom and study, with modest belongings preserved largely as he left them; newspaper clippings recount the event. You'll also see the bullet holes resulting from the first attempt on his life. A garden courtyard contains Trotsky's tomb. Exhibit information is in Spanish.
