AAA Inspector Notes
This truly unique property is serenely surrounded by and in the midst of botanical gardens. There are more than 500 species of plant and floral life, giving it the aura of a tropical rain forest. There are only 12 guest units from which to choose, which also includes a couple of cottages. Each room is artistically decorated in its own theme and personal touches with many featuring antiques and hand-painted murals. As you walk the grounds you'll notice that the walkways are made of natural coral rock. The natural swimming pond and resident wildlife make this small property the perfect romantic getaway. Exciting nightlife and a slew of restaurants and shops are just a short walk away. Not evaluated; management refused inspection on 01/13/2016. Facilities, services, and décor characterize an upscale property.

Pros: The grounds are lovely. That's the nicest thing I can say about this place, to be honest
Cons: There was a wedding on site the day we arrived, which prevented us from enjoying the grounds and from moving freely around since the wedding party was taking pictures along the pathways. Couldn't even reach our room while carrying luggage without being stopped several times. We were not notified of the wedding until 2 days before arrival. We had dinner reservations at the restaurant and were placed in a front courtyard and I'm pretty much convinced that the waiter forgot about us a few times based on the extremely long wait to get drink refills and then the check. The food was good. Parking was also scarce on property. The room, while spacious, is very dark unless you have both doors open. Considering the location in the gardens, you would think they would take advantage of more natural light; instead it felt like staying in a cave. We stayed in Malabar; the beds were comfortable, the room was spacious, but overall it was oddly furnished with horse memorabilia and the bathroom, while updated had one of the narrowest showers I remember encountering in a hotel room. We might possibly return for dinner at the restaurant but I would never voluntarily stay here again. The staff seemed disinterested; I tried to use the room safe and it would not work. We called the front desk, who sent over a maintenance person to look at it. He looked at it and said he would have to find a key. Never heard back from anyone about this issue, and safe never worked. The morning we left, the sprinklers were on which covered the pathways. It took about 20 minutes to find someone to turn them off long enough for us to leave.

Pros: We loved the whimsical, colorful room. Soft bed, great kitchenette and in room laundry unit that really helped us out during our stay. Very friendly staff and walkable to the fun downtown- a great location. Del Ray Beach itself is really vibrant and youthful. The botanical garden at the Sundy House was beautiful. I like the historic home and the color and decor of the place- it adds a lot of interest to the space.
Cons: We weren't aware that the cenote swimming pools, the main reason for our decision to stay, had been transformed into non-swim ponds. That was a big disappointment for us. We were really looking forward to them and swimming with tropical fish. It would have been great in the hot FL weather. Also, breakfast is not included and for the price you pay to stay it probably should be, although there is no shortage of good (but pricey) restaurants nearby.
