Gamble Plantation Historic State Park and Judah P. Benjamin Confederate Memorial, 3708 Patten Ave., was a prosperous 3,500-acre sugar plantation from about 1845 to the late 1850s. The antebellum mansion is furnished in period. At the end of the Civil War, Judah P. Benjamin, secretary of state of the Confederacy, found refuge here before escaping to England. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Grounds and visitor center free. Mansion tour $6; $4 (ages 6-12).
Hours: Grounds open daily 8 a.m.-dusk. Visitor Center open Thurs.-Mon. 9-5. Mansion tours are given Thurs.-Mon. at 9:30, 10:30, 1, 2, 3 and 4. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
