Southwest Florida Museum of History is at 2031 Jackson St. In a restored train depot, artifacts depict the history of southwest Florida from the Paleo-Indian period to the present. Of interest is the Land of Giants: Paleo Florida, an exhibit highlighting mammoths, mastodons and saber-tooth cats from the Pleistocene Epoch. Also displayed is The Esperanza, the longest and the last-built Pullman private railroad car, and a replica of a Florida Cracker house. Traveling exhibits also are offered. Downtown walking tours are conducted. Audio tours in English and Spanish are available. Guided tours are available.
$9.50; $8.50 (ages 55+); $5 (ages 5-12 and students with ID). A higher fee may be charged for special exhibits. Reservations are required for walking tours. Phone ahead to confirm tour schedule and rates.
