Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, 200 Greene St., displays both precious and functional artifacts recovered from the wreckage of two Spanish galleons. While en route to Spain from Havana, the ships sank 40 miles off Key West in a hurricane Sept. 6, 1622. Highlights of the collection include a 77.76-carat emerald as well as gold and silver religious objects. Informative exhibits illustrate techniques of underwater archeology. The museum also presents temporary exhibits.
Guided tours of the conservation laboratory are offered.
